Seventh Generation of Shouksmith Family Become Freemen of the City of York

Two hundred years after Joseph Shouksmith became a Freeman of the City of York in 1806, his descendants Claire, David and Edward Shouksmith, members of the family who continue to retain business interests in local building services company J. H. Shouksmiths & Sons. Ltd, have been made Freemen of the City at a special ceremony held at York’s Guildhall.

The seventh generation of the family to take up the honour, becoming a ‘Freeman’ does not provide any privileges in the City, but once sworn in the new ‘Freemen’ may join the Guild of Freemen who continue to take interest in the affairs of York.

David, who is a project manager, and Edward, who is an estimator, both work for the family firm’s Leeds operation, Morfitts, which provides mechanical and electrical design, installation and maintenance services on commercial and industrial projects to clients throughout the UK.  Claire works in Dorset as a Special Needs Nanny.

Commenting on the Ceremony, Richard Shouksmith, Company Chairman said: “It is a great honour to be a ‘Freeman’ of York and a great tradition that has been passed through the generations of the Shouksmith family.  The fact that is exactly two hundred years since the first Shouksmith became a Freeman makes it particularly poignant and I am delighted that the tradition continues.’’
