New Crief Farm Monastery Project Goes Green

A 185kw capacity wood chip boiler and associated fuel supply system has recently been installed as part of Morfitts’ £925,000 M&E services contract at the new monastery project at Crief Farm, Wass, North Yorkshire.  Specified by the client’s consulting engineers, Faber Maunsell, the boiler is one of a wide range of environmentally friendly measures being installed on the project, which will provide essential monastic living accommodation for 26 Benedictine Nuns, currently residing in Worcestershire.

Built on a hill top site, this is the first ‘new build’ monastery to be constructed in the country for around 500 Years.  Main contractor on the project is William Birch and Sons Ltd., and the project is due for completion in Spring 2009.

John Cundale, Morfitts’ mechanical engineer said: "Working on a new monastery is quite unusual, to say the least, but being asked to source and install an environmentally friendly boiler is less so.  As clients seek to reduce their carbon footprint and use alternative sources of energy, our expertise in providing appropriate, sustainable solutions is more and more in demand.”

Paul Goyea, William Birch and Sons Ltd. added: “The Client has taken great care in choosing the location of the Order’s idyllic and monastic environment. Both Morfitts and William Birch & Sons have risen to the technical and weather exposure challenges which the project offers.”
