An encore for Morfitts as another ODEON cinema reaches completion!

Following on from the success of its project at ODEON Wrexham, Morfitts has just completed the £2 million mechanical and electrical contract at the new ODEON Metrocentre, located at the heart of the Metrocentre Qube – the North East’s new entertainment destination.
One of the major features involved in the 24 week project was installation of the digital IMAX® screen. Morfitts worked closely with the IMAX® screen manufacturers throughout the process and tested the screen, to ensure the required level of visual and surround sound effects were produced. Morfitts was also responsible for the complex electrical installations of the other 11 digital and 3D screens.
Another key component of the project was the installation of the high specification building services in the foyer, auditoriums, public and back of house areas – which involved fitting full heating and cooling to each auditorium via 15 roof mounted air handling units. A large sprinkler system was installed, in addition to voice evacuation and emergency lighting systems linked to the projection and sound equipment, digitally controlled dimming and colour change lighting to the bar areas, a disabled refuge call system and a digital induction loop sound system.
The complexity of the project, due to the low ceilings in the building, meant a large amount of ductwork was required and an innovative air sampling fire detection system was installed within the roof void.
The new state-of-the-art, 12 screen cinema – which officially opened to the public on 16th December – has 2,700 seats and offers cinemagoers a groundbreaking, fully-digital cinema experience, as well as the first, and only, digital IMAX® screen in the North East of England. In addition to the screens, the cinema also has a wide range of retail offerings, including Ben & Jerry’s and Costa Coffee, plus two striking new bars: The Gallery Bar and Ambar.
Mick Booth, Morfitts’ Site Manager on the project, said: “Due to the location of the cinema itself and the timeframe it needed to be completed within meant that this was a very challenging and complex project. Our previous experience of working with the ODEON team proved invaluable and we are delighted to now see the cinema open and being enjoyed by the public.”
In addition to working on new build projects, Morfitts has also undertaken maintenance services work for ODEON Cinemas for a number of years.
