Wednesday, 5th May 2010
John Miller, managing director J. H. Shouksmith and Sons Ltd., has been appointed to the Board of SummitSkills, the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the Building Services Engineering (BSE) sector.
SummitSkills has been created by employers, for employers, to address six key objectives:
• Employer engagement
• Offering expertise, safeguarding standards
• Enhancing quality and delivery
• Raising ambition
• Effectiveness and evolution
• Partnership approach
John joins other employers from multinational companies to sole traders, all representing a cross-section of businesses within the sector. This employer-led approach gives employers in building services engineering a key role to influence strategic planning relating to skills and training.
John commented: "I am delighted to have joined the Board of SummitSkills and to be able to influence the direction and effectiveness of training in our industry. I have always had a belief and a passion that the way to a better and more effective industry was via a skilled workforce, and SummitSkills take the lead on this agenda."
The BSE sector is playing a major role in meeting the carbon reduction targets set by Government and recently confirmed in the 2010 Budget report. Reducing emissions, lowering energy consumption and conserving water cannot be achieved without this sector’s role in specifying, designing, installing and maintaining environmental technologies. SummitSkills has prioritised environmental technologies training in recognition of its future importance, to ensure that the sector can become more proactive in promoting the green agenda to customers and act as a trailblazer for green skills.
