To the ends of the earth – Shouksmiths supports Polar Race attempt in aid of Children with Leukaemia
Tuesday, 10th March 2009
Shouksmiths has announced that is to make a significant financial contribution to the charity 'Children with Leukaemia' in recognition of the participation by Claire Shouksmith, daughter of company chairman Richard, in the 2009 Polar Race.
The contribution forms part of the company’s Choose a Charity scheme, launched in 2007, which is funded by an amount taken each year from the Company's pre-tax profits. The scheme encourages employees and their families to nominate a charity or seek support for their own fund raising activities, and since its launch over 24 local and national charities have benefited from its donations.
Described by organisers as ‘probably the world's toughest race’, Claire and 16 other competitors started the Polar Race from Resolute Bay in the former North West Territories of Canada at the end of March, and ended 350 miles later in the 1996 certified position of the Magnetic North Pole.
Claire said: “Children with Leukaemia is a charity which researches into drug treatments and the after affects these treatments have on children. Whilst the improvement in survival rates for childhood leukaemia is one of the great medical success stories of the late 20th century, with four out of five children cured, we are only now finding out the long term health problems caused by these drug treatments. Children with Leukaemia funds the vital research to minimise these current problems, and my close involvement with a family experiencing these difficulties inspired me to do something to help raise as much money to help this charity as possible.”
Richard Shouksmith commented: “The Polar Race is one of the greatest tests of stamina, teamwork and mental toughness anyone can put themselves through. We are enormously proud that Claire is prepared to undertake this challenge, and are delighted to be able to show our support by making a donation to the charity of her choice, Children with Leukaemia.”
