Company history

Our history can be traced back to 1820 when Joseph Shouksmith became a Freeman of the City of York. In 1919 J H Shouksmith & Sons Ltd was formed, and became one of the first limited liability companies to operate in York.

Expansion began with new divisions being added, including Turner & Pritchard Ltd. in Gloucester in 1966 and H Morfitt & Son Ltd. of Leeds in 1976, further strengthening our commercial and industrial mechanical capability.

In 1985, Briggs & Hunt of Worksop, was acquired, which is now Shouksmiths Sheffield, and in 1996 the company restructured, with all former subsidiaries becoming trading divisions of J H Shouksmith & Sons Ltd.

In 1998, Morfitts formed a new Electrical Division, and in 2006 Shouksmiths acquired Keda Plumbing Company Ltd., in Bolton, giving the company a presence in the North West.

Throughout its history, we have always remained a family run business. We are proud to say that our current Group Chairman is Richard Shouksmith, and his sons David and Edward both work for the company - the seventh generation of Shouksmiths to be involved with the business.
